Jesus Heals a Leper | Matthew 8:1-4

In Matthew 8:1–4, Jesus moves from the mountain into the brokenness of everyday life, and the first person He encounters is a leper—someone unclean, excluded, and desperate for hope. Coming on the heels of the Sermon on the Mount, this miracle answers the lingering question from Matthew 7: Does Jesus really have the authority He claims?

As Jesus heals the leper with a word, Matthew shows us that Christ’s authority is not only heard in His teaching but demonstrated in His actions. Jesus is not defiled by the unclean—He makes the unclean clean.

This sermon calls us to consider how we respond to Jesus’ authority. Do we trust Him? Do we submit to Him? Do we rest in Him? And what does it mean to come to Jesus honestly, even when we feel unworthy or ashamed?
